Fractional executive work is found in four places: free job boards such as Fractional Jobs, managed marketplaces such as Go Fractional, Fractionus, Catalant, Business Talent Group, Toptal and Paro, specialist firms such as Chief Outsiders, and open channels such as LinkedIn and Upwork. The Pivot Lab checked 14 platforms on their own websites on October 18, 2026. They differ most on vetting and on how they get paid. Platforms add deal flow, but in the 2026 FractionalJobs survey 70% of fractional leaders found their first client through their own network.
This guide lists what each platform is, which roles it covers, how you get in, and what it says about fees to talent. Where a platform does not publish something, the table says "not published". We did not estimate anyone's take rate.

Which fractional platforms are free for executives?
Fractional Jobs (fractionaljobs.io)
A job board and talent network built only for fractional work. Listings run across 12 functions, including finance, marketing, operations, sales, product, people and legal, with many CFO, CTO, controller and general counsel roles. Joining means adding your email address; its help page says "you don't need to be 'approved'. Anyone can join." New jobs go out in a Monday newsletter. For featured jobs you send an intro request, the Fractional Jobs team reviews it, and the site says you will hear back within 14 days. Its FAQ says it "does not take any cut of your earnings, nor does it charge fractionals." You contract directly with the client; the company pays Fractional Jobs a one-time referral fee of $3,000 to $8,000 if it hires. Suits: anyone starting out who wants a steady view of real fractional roles. Checked October 18, 2026: home page, FAQ, joining help page.
Umbrex
A selective community of independent management consultants. Umbrex says it is "primarily for former MBB consultants", and that a broader sister community, Veritux, takes a wider range of consulting backgrounds. Membership needs an application and a decision usually comes within 48 hours. Umbrex says it "does not charge membership or application fees"; projects it staffs are invoiced through Umbrex, which adds "a modest margin". Suits: former top-tier strategy consultants. Checked October 18, 2026: join page, about page.
Paro
A marketplace for finance and accounting talent: fractional CFO work, FP&A, accounting and bookkeeping, tax. Paro says only the top 2% of applicants are accepted, after an application, an interview, a skills assessment and a third-party background check. It states "there are no fees to join the Paro network", but every expert must carry errors and omissions (E&O) insurance, must be based in the United States (not California or Massachusetts), and is generally expected to commit 15 to 20 hours a week. Suits: US-based finance leaders who want a steady pipeline of finance engagements. Checked October 18, 2026: experts page, how Paro works.
LinkedIn Service Pages
Not a marketplace, but the place many clients already look. LinkedIn says any member can create a Service Page for free, and any member can message you about your services for free. With a Premium Business, Sales Navigator or Recruiter Lite subscription, your profile shows a Services Showcase with a "Request proposal" button and your reviews. Suits: everyone. It works best with a clear one-line offer. Checked October 18, 2026: LinkedIn Service Pages FAQ.
GLG
An expert network rather than a fractional platform. Members are paid for one-to-one calls and surveys, and GLG also lists small group meetings, longer-term projects and board opportunities. You set your own hourly rate when you build your profile, and you may not share confidential or non-public information. Suits: leaders who want paid conversations with investors and companies in their industry while they build a fractional practice. Checked October 18, 2026: network member page, expert sign-up page.
How do managed fractional marketplaces work?
A managed marketplace sits between you and the client. It finds the client, often handles the contract and the invoicing, and earns its money from the engagement. The trade is simple: less selling for you, a share of the fee for them, and usually a vetting step first.
Go Fractional
Go Fractional says it gives companies access to "1000's of multi-exited executives and leaders". Talent applies to its Talent Network and sets up a portfolio of experience and services; Go Fractional then connects members with clients and says it will "handle the proposals, contracts, and invoicing". Its launch post says consultants control "their own monthly rates". It does not publish what share it keeps. Suits: experienced operators who would rather not run contracting and billing themselves. Checked October 18, 2026 via Go Fractional's own pages (home page, fractional CIO guide, launch post); the site blocked our direct fetch, so these were read from search-indexed copies of those pages.
Fractionus
Fractionus places fractional leaders in roles from CFO, COO and CMO to CRO, CTO, CHRO and general counsel, as fractional (one to three days a week), interim or contract-to-hire engagements. It says under 3% of applicants are accepted. Its own fee article says it works as "a partnership with its talent, split 80/20": the executive sets the rate and keeps 80% of each invoice, and companies pay no placement fee. Its platform comparison says it operates in Australia, the US and the UK. Suits: senior leaders comfortable with a revenue-share model in exchange for matched clients. Checked October 18, 2026: home page, fee article, platform comparison.
Catalant
A marketplace for independent consultants and boutique firms serving large companies. Catalant's home page cites "40K+" active consultants with an average of "20+ years of experience". You apply to become verified (it says this takes 2 to 5 business days), build a profile, pitch for projects, interview with the client and submit a proposal. You are paid through the marketplace rather than directly by the client. Its customer terms describe a "Catalant Fee" charged to the client as a percentage of project fees; the percentage is not published. Suits: former corporate leaders and consultants who want project work with enterprise buyers. Checked October 18, 2026: home page, independent consultants page, customer terms.
Business Talent Group (BTG)
A curated marketplace of management consultants, subject matter experts and executives, including interim leaders "from the VP level through the C-suite". BTG says "only full-time independent consultants are accepted into our marketplace", and that it vets talent with interviews, skills diagnosis, reference and background checks. Clients choose from a curated slate. Fees to talent are not published. Suits: full-time independents with consulting firm or large-company backgrounds who want interim and project roles. Checked October 18, 2026: home page, talent page, become an independent consultant.
Toptal
Best known for developers, Toptal also lists management consultants (including finance experts and financial modelers), product managers, project managers, marketing experts and sales experts. Its screening has five steps (language and personality, skill review, live screening, a one-to-three-week test project, then ongoing performance) and takes 3 to 8 weeks; Toptal says 3% of applicants make it through. Its talent FAQ says "Talent members set their own rates and Toptal does not take a cut from that." Suits: finance, product and project leaders who can pass a structured test and want part-time or hourly engagements. Checked October 18, 2026: home page, screening process, talent FAQ.
Bolster
An executive search firm with a network of executives "ready for fractional, interim, advisory, and project based roles", plus board searches. Executives add a profile to the network to be considered for full-time, fractional and board searches. Bolster's pricing page lists "Fractional & Interim: $2,500 upfront + 20% markup"; it does not say who pays or whether the markup sits on top of your rate, and it does not mention any fee to executives. Suits: C-level and VP leaders open to fractional, interim or board roles with venture-backed companies. Checked October 18, 2026: home page, on-demand hiring, pricing.
Which firms hire fractional CMOs, CFOs and COOs directly?
Chief Outsiders
A firm of fractional go-to-market executives rather than an open marketplace. It offers fractional CMO, fractional CSO and interim CMO services and describes "120+ fractional and interim CXOs". Its careers page asks for 15 to 25 years of executive leadership, including 5+ years as head of marketing or sales, VP, CMO or CSO roles at multiple large companies reporting to the CEO, and work with mid-market and PE-backed clients. It says it screens out resumes "primarily built on agency roles or consulting assignments". Whether executives join as employees or contractors, and any fees, are not published. Suits: career CMOs and sales leaders. Checked October 18, 2026: home page, careers page.
Connectd
A platform connecting startups with fractional executives, board advisors and non-executives. Its fractional page targets "CFOs, CMOs, CTOs, COOs, and VPs with 12+ years of experience" and describes a pathway with a five-module, 30 CPD-point academy, 180 minutes of one-to-one mentoring and a three-month pro bono placement with an early-stage business. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Membership prices are not listed on the pages we checked. Suits: leaders making a first move into fractional or advisory work who want structure and a first placement. Checked October 18, 2026: home page, fractional page.
For fractional CFO work specifically, Paro (above) is the finance-only option in this list, and Fractional Jobs, Fractionus and Toptal all list finance roles. For fractional COO work, Fractional Jobs lists operations as a category and Fractionus lists COO roles.
Is Upwork worth it for fractional executives?
Upwork is free to join and open to any skill. Its pricing pages say freelancers pay a service fee of 0% to 15% per contract, shown before you submit a proposal and fixed once the contract starts. Proposals cost Connects: a free Basic plan may include 10 a month, and Freelancer Plus costs $19.99 a month with 100 Connects and 0% fees on direct contracts. Suits: defined, short projects such as a model, a pricing review or a board pack, rather than ongoing executive roles. Checked October 18, 2026: freelancer pricing, is Upwork free.
How much do fractional platforms take from executives?
Read the published fee models side by side and four patterns appear:
- Nothing out of your rate. Fractional Jobs takes 0% of earnings and charges the company a one-time $3,000 to $8,000 referral fee. Toptal says it takes no cut of the rate you set.
- A margin added to the client's bill. Umbrex adds "a modest margin" to projects it invoices. Catalant charges the client a Catalant Fee as a percentage of project fees.
- A share of each invoice. Fractionus describes an 80/20 split. Upwork deducts 0% to 15% per contract.
- Not published. Go Fractional, BTG, Chief Outsiders, Connectd and GLG do not publish what they keep or charge talent on the pages we checked. Ask before you sign, and get the answer in writing.
The fee model changes your rate math. If a platform keeps a share of each invoice, quote a rate high enough that your take-home still meets your target. The retainer pricing calculator shows what a monthly retainer works out to per hour, and how much fractional executives charge covers rates by role.
Do platforms replace your own network?
Not for most people. In the FractionalJobs 2026 survey of 1,733 fractional leaders, 70% found their first client through their own network, and 95% named network referrals as a current client source. Platforms are best treated as a second channel. From Corporate to Cash by The Pivot Lab starts with the Warm 50 method: a list of 50 people who have already seen your work. A platform profile then adds reach on top of that.
Before you apply anywhere, decide what you are selling. Are you offering a fractional role, an interim assignment or a project? Fractional vs interim vs consultant explains the difference, and how many clients a fractional executive can handle helps you size how many platform engagements you can take on.
How do you choose the right fractional platform?
- Match the platform to your background. Former MBB consultants fit Umbrex; finance leaders fit Paro; career CMOs fit Chief Outsiders; broad operators fit Fractional Jobs, Fractionus or Go Fractional.
- Check who you contract with. With Fractional Jobs you contract with the client; with Catalant and Paro you are paid through the platform.
- Find out the fee before the first interview. If it is not published, ask.
- Read the non-solicit terms. Some platforms limit working directly with a client you met through them. Catalant's customer terms, for example, set an employment fee if a client hires a restricted expert as an employee.
- Apply to two or three, not ten. A strong profile on a few platforms beats thin ones everywhere, and you still need time for your own network.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best platform for fractional executive jobs?
There is no single best one. Fractional Jobs is the broadest free job board. Fractionus and Go Fractional are managed marketplaces. Paro is finance-only, and Chief Outsiders covers marketing and sales leaders. Pick based on your function and whether you want to handle contracting yourself.
Do fractional platforms take a cut of your earnings?
Some do and some do not. Fractional Jobs says it takes 0%. Toptal says it takes no cut of the rate you set. Fractionus describes an 80/20 split, and Upwork charges 0% to 15%. Several platforms do not publish their fees.
Where can I find fractional CFO jobs?
Paro is built for finance talent. Fractional Jobs, Fractionus and Toptal also list finance roles. Most fractional CFOs still win early clients through their own network.
Can you find fractional work on LinkedIn?
Yes. A free LinkedIn Service Page makes your services searchable, and any member can message you about them. You can also search LinkedIn Jobs for "fractional" plus your function.
Do you need a platform to go fractional?
No. Most first clients come from people you already know. A platform is a useful second channel once your offer, your rate and your target client are clear. Start with the going fractional guide.
The bottom line
Fractional executive work is listed on free job boards (Fractional Jobs), managed marketplaces (Go Fractional, Fractionus, Catalant, BTG, Toptal, Paro), specialist firms (Chief Outsiders) and open channels (LinkedIn, Upwork, GLG). They differ most in vetting and in how they get paid, and several do not publish fees, so ask before you sign. The survey evidence points one way: your own network finds most first clients, and platforms add to it rather than replace it. Pick two or three that match your background, price your take-home after any platform share, and keep your outreach running.
Sources and method
Every platform fact on this page was checked on the platform's own website on October 18, 2026, using the pages linked in each section. Where a platform does not publish a fee, vetting step or network size, we say so rather than estimate it. We also checked A.Team (which now presents itself as an applied AI company staffing engineers), Graphite Financial (an outsourced accounting and finance firm, not a talent marketplace) and continuum.work (the domain was listed for sale), and left them out. Network-referral figures come from the FractionalJobs 2026 Fractional Work Survey (1,733 respondents, published October 1, 2026; self-reported, 78% US). The Warm 50 method comes from From Corporate to Cash. Platforms change their terms often; check each one before you apply. This page is general information, not legal or financial advice. Have the offer ready before the platform calls
A platform can introduce you; it cannot tell the client what you do or what it costs. From Corporate to Cash by The Pivot Lab covers the Warm 50 method, the Three-Tier Offer Stack and how to price a retainer. The Complete Bundle adds a 50-file toolkit with proposal templates and a Pricing Calculator workbook. New to this? Read the going fractional guide or try the free consulting tools.
